Style Rant: Dressing Up Vs. Dressing Well

People often ask: Why’re you so dressed up all the time?

Well, I’m not dressed up.

To clarify things, there’s a difference between dressing up and dressing well. Not to say that I – or any other fashion conscious male are always dressed well, but there’s a fine line between the two, as well as understanding what each entails.

Simply put, think of it this way. Dressing up = suit and tie for an occasion and Dressing well = being presentable and looking good in mundane situations.

Most males tend to think that putting a little more effort into an outfit is considered dressing up – because let’s face it: guys are used to throwing on their favorite tshirt and jeans – sometimes wearing the same thing repetitively over the span of a few days. Smarten up. It’s not a matter of being super fashionable and trendy, but about caring for how you present yourself to others. You automatically show politeness and respect by how you look. It also makes you feel more confident. Guaranteed.

I’d be a hypocrite if I said I always wore a button-up, chinos, dress shoes and a blazer. I don’t. Nobody really does. But.. I try to wear clean clothes and pay attention to details that improve the way I look. Even if on a given day I decide to wear sweats, I’d opt for a slimmer fitting pair and pin-roll the bottoms. Just look presentable, it’s common sense.

Think of it this way, or at least for a second think of it the way I do.

First impressions matter. They also tend to be lasting impressions. You never know who you might meet on any given day, be it professional or casual.

I understand everyone has different priorities in their daily lives, but it’ll never hurt you to put in a little bit of extra effort towards the presentation of who you are.

End of rant.
