A Culinary Experience Worth Sharing | Chotto Matte

I had heard great things about Chotto Matte since it’s opening in Toronto – and I was very eager to try it. While I was in Miami earlier this year, I wanted to give it a try, but I didn’t end up getting the chance, so it made sense to check it out right here in Toronto.

As a casual foodie (I’ve been cooking at home more nowadays), I was very excited about finally getting to experience Peruvian and Japanese inspired cooking. The pictures and reviews were mouthwatering – and upon getting to the restaurant, I was taken away by the beauty of the aesthetics and interior. And it’s located at 161 Bay St, so this location is right in the heart of downtown!

Flor De Manzana

Menu-wise, Chotto Matte offers a variety of sharing plates that are moderate sized. Julie and I ordered around 7 dishes and that was plenty of food! The cocktails are also worth noting because they were unique in nature, but still embodied classic favourites.

Canchas + Sweet Potato and Yuca Chips

Since we didn’t want to commit to a tasting menu, we decided to pick out of a few times from the tasting courses, as well as a few recommended favourites from our server, Matt (who was fantastic by the way). We started with some appetizers: the Canchas (corn puffs) and Sweet Potato and Yuca Chips (they came with a fresh guacamole and yellow tomato salsa), which were light and flavorful!

Eight Piece Nikkei Dressed Sushi

The food came rather quickly, so before we were done our appetizers, the Nikkei Dressed Sushi arrived. This was an exciting take on sushi – and the flavours were way beyond my expectations. A definite must when you dine here!

Pato Crujiente con Salsa Peruana

And now my favourite, the crispy duck, with honey orange ponzu and  jalapeño! This phenomenal dish was recommended to us by our server – and it surpassed every expectation I had. A must try!

Bacalao Negro Aji Miso

Another notable dish! The yellow chilli miso black cod was out of this world. The variety of bold flavours combined so well with the cod; and it just melts in your mouth. Julie’s favourite!

Arroz Chaufa

We had to get a carb dish – and the egg fried rice was a great choice. It’s a simple fried rice that has a kick of distinctive taste and texture, making it classic favourite with an added bit of excitement.

Pollo Den Miso

We finished off with the miso chicken, which was, as I expected, fantastic. The barbecued chicken was cooked perfectly, and had light dressing was the perfect touch of flavour.

I have to say that every plate at this restaurant was tastefully done and we genuinely had a great time dining here. We’ll definitely be back – and if you get the chance, check it out and be sure to #comeasyouare !
