5 Essentials for an Enjoyable Bike Ride Around Vancouver

Vancouver has become one of my favourite cities to bike around, especially after picking up the Momentum VOYA E+ 3. With its stunning natural beauty and well-designed cycling routes, it invites both novice and seasoned cyclists for an unforgettable biking adventure. Whether that’s a simple ride around Stanley Park or a slightly longer adventure, there’s something for everyone. Plus – it’s good, low-impact exercise!

To ensure you make the most of your journey through this picturesque city, there are some essentials that I usually bring along to ensure I have a great experience. If you’re reading from somewhere that’s not Vancouver, this also applies!

From safety to comfort and everything in between, let’s dive right in into the 5 must-have essentials that will elevate your biking experience and ensure you always have a good time.

  1. A Good Helmetbecause, safety first! As you gear up for your biking adventure, your first priority should always be safety. A high-quality helmet is more than just an accessory – it’s your ultimate safeguard on the road. Vancouver’s diverse biking trails, ranging from seaside paths to urban streets, present unique challenges that require adequate protection. A helmet specifically designed for biking will shield your head from potential accidents (because no one plans on getting hurt) and give you the confidence to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking surroundings.
  2. A Water Bottle – as staying hydrated is of utmost importance! Vancouver’s varying landscapes mean you’ll be pedalling through changing climates and terrains. To keep your energy levels up and your body performing at its best, staying hydrated is crucial. A sturdy, easy-to-sip-from water bottle is your trusty companion on the journey. Secure it in your bike’s holder or keep it within reach in your pack.
  3. Storage (Backpack or Pannier Bag) for any extras you’d like to bring along. Packing for a bike adventure requires a delicate balance between carrying essentials and maintaining riding comfort. Whether you opt for a streamlined backpack or a functional pannier bag, the right storage solution ensures easy access to your belongings. Tuck away a spare jacket for unexpected weather changes, store your camera for capturing scenic moments, and keep snacks on hand for a quick pick-me-up. With a well-organized storage strategy, you’ll be prepared for every twist and turn your ride brings about.
  4. Headphones – to keep you going. Imagine cycling through Vancouver’s breathtaking trails with a curated soundtrack accompanying your journey. That’s where headphones come in. Slip on your favourite pair and curate a playlist that complements the experience. Even podcasts or audiobooks are great – especially for those longer rides. Pump up the tempo for exhilarating downhill rides or opt for soothing melodies that sync with the tranquility of the parks. While tunes enhance the adventure, ensure your headphones allow ambient sounds to filter through, keeping you aware of your surroundings for a safe and enjoyable ride.
  5. Comfortable and Functional Attire – for when you’re on the bike or not. Fashion takes a back seat to comfort when it comes to biking attire, but that doesn’t mean you have to completely sacrifice style. With brands like DUER making functional and comfortable clothes, you can still look great, even on the bike. The key is to wear good clothes that enable freedom of movement while being mindful of Vancouver’s ever-changing weather. Moisture-wicking fabrics that keep sweat at bay are great – especially if you are commuting with your bike or simply have plans after your bike ride. When you’re at ease in your outfit, you’re in for a great comfortable ride and ultimately a great day.

With all that in mind, there are often other items that may be essential in your day to day life that I might have missed; so feel free to bring those along as you see fit. In my opinion, the above essentials will set you up for success if you’re still getting comfortable with cycling more frequently.
