First Impressions Count – How To Make A Great One

Making a great first impression might be something you want to do for a few reasons. Maybe you want to make a great impression because you’re trying to get investors for your new business. Maybe you’re trying to strike up some kind of deal or partnership. Perhaps you’re meeting with a client – even your partner’s parents! Whatever it is, knowing how to make a great first impression is key. Below, there are some simple and useful pointers that will help you to do just that.

Smile

Smiling is one of the easiest things you can do to make a great first impression right away. You only have about 3 seconds to do this upon meeting somebody, so make sure you open with a smile.

Positive Body Language

Using positive body language is key, so stay aware of you’re holding and presenting yourself. This is usually a subconscious thing, so you need to remain aware of what you’re doing in the situation. You should stand up straight, as this conveys confidence. Don’t fold your arms, as this would suggest you are closed off. Make eye contact, too – not everybody is comfortable with this, but it could indicate that you’re shy or rude if you don’t.

Focus On The Image You Want To Portray

What sort of image are you trying to portray? Make sure you dress the part! Obviously it should be in clothes you’re comfortable in to avoid feeling odd, but if the occasion calls for ‘smart’, make sure you dress that way. You might also want to focus on other things, such as your car. If your car is a little beat up, learning how to car wrap could help you to make it look new again and feel more confident.

Listen

You shouldn’t make this all about you. People like to be heard, so practice active listening. This is where you are truly focusing your attention on the other person, nodding along and taking in what they are saying. Don’t use what they say to turn the situation back to yourself, unless they ask. Getting somebody to talk more about themselves will make you more likeable.

Speak Clearly

No matter how much you listen, you will have to speak at some stage. Ensure you speak clearly enough, but pay attention to your volume and tone. You don’t want to intimidate.

Be Yourself

Of course, being yourself is always the best advice. This could change based on the situation – if you’re going to a job interview, it’s probably best to keep those unprofessional jokes to yourself. However, feel free to show a sense of humor!

Remember Names

Remembering names is a great trait and makes people feel valued. Use them often enough to show that you remember them (just not too much).

Be On Time

Being on time shows that you respect the other person’s schedule. Always show up on time!

Be Positive

Finally, try to stay positive. People don’t like to be around those with negative mindsets so much. You might not realize it, but if you have a negative outlook this could tint everything you say and do. Try to stay upbeat.
